Edger Kasunsu – Five Plus Interview

Edger Kasunsu is an occasional writer with Readers’ Café Africa, poet and a student at Kyambogo University pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

Tell us about yourself
Hard question. I am a normal guy of average height who loves music with almost the whole of his heart. There is nothing out of the ordinary about me although some of my friends say I am quiet, slightly reserved and sensitive. I love reading, writing, watching movies (especially Sci-Fi, comedy and animations) and anything to do with machines.

How long have you been a poet?
I started writing when I was in form 3 at a certain beautiful school in Jinja. I guess that’s now 7 years.

Do you remember the first poem you ever recited? What was the experience like?
I remember the day, I remember the time and the poem. I was so nervous I felt like I was floating in space as I recited. It was one of the coolest experiences I have ever gone through.

What inspires you to write poetry?
Being alive, living life and experiencing each and every day that life throws at me.

How seriously do you take your poetry?
I write whenever I am inspired, that’s how seriously I take my poetry.

Does it stop at a hobby, or do you also make a living out of it?
For now it is a hobby.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how good are you at your poetry?
I guess I am somewhere between 4 and 6.

Do you sit and think through every word of every stanza or do you recite freely allowing the words to flow?
On most occasions, I let the poem write itself. I just sit still and let the words flow out of my fingers. I look at the words later when I am done writing the poem.

Is it true that poets are good at courtship and the dating game?
Poets do know how to choose their words carefully, but I think it all depends on a person’s personality.

Besides poetry, what else do you do?
I am an occasional writer with Readers’ Café Africa, an online hub for writers. I am also a student at Kyambogo University pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

How can one get your poetry?
I have a blog at my.opera.com/edgar11. I also recite every first Tuesday of the month at Open Mic Fusion 360 whenever I get the chance.
